At SEA, we believe that art is an individual expression that, when shared, can connect, challenge, and inspire our community. Our students learn to explore their creativity confidently and to appreciate others’ talents, through participation in music and the visual and performing arts. Access to art education builds our students’ ability to make sense of the world around them, as well as their creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration skills—all essential for success in the 21st century.
We recognize that showcasing creative expression before an audience takes confidence and courage -- skills that serve our students well on the stage, in the classroom, and throughout their lives.
Music
Music hones skills such as confidence, responsibility, teamwork, discipline, and organization, and ignites creativity in our students. Every student takes music class throughout the school year. Instruction focuses on basic elements of music, such as rhythm, harmony, and melody and intellectualizing music—hearing, reading, and writing. Students learn the cultural and historical contexts of various works to discern and appreciate stylistic differences, ultimately developing their musical taste.
Performing Arts
The performing arts program invites students to challenge themselves artistically, creatively, and intellectually. Every class in Early Childhood and Lower School produces a grade-level performance each year, giving students the chance to build teamwork and enhance their creative expression. In Upper School, there is a fall play and spring musical produced by students in all grades.
Visual Arts
The art curriculum is woven around artistic principles, concepts, and habits, growing in complexity from year to year, from Preschool through 8th Grade. Students participate in the traditional fine art mediums of drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture, as well as collage, weaving, and ceramics. The curriculum is shaped in part by current events, students’ interests, and past art experiences. Our Art program culminates each year with the annual Fine Arts Festival, when every student in the school has art pieces on display.
